The ruling AIADMK has scraped through in the Assembly elections with the narrowest of margins, just about 1 per cent. The AIADMK front secured 40.8 per cent, just one per cent ahead of the DMK alliance vote percentage of 39.7. If the AIADMK had not taken in minor allies who were allotted seven seats, the DMK front could have overtaken the AIADMK in terms of vote percentage and also number of seats.

The AIADMK has secured a vote share of 41.7 per cent so far, about 10.8 % ahead of the DMK (30.9). If the votes of Congress (6.4 %, IUML 1.2, 0.7 % of MMK, and 0.5 % of PT, etc) are added, the DMK alliance has polled about 39.7 per cent votes, just 2 per cent below that of AIADMK.

Thanthi TV , in an Exit Poll aired on May 17 night, has predicted 111 seats for AIADMK and 99 seats for DMK-led alliance, with 16 seats still in the Neck To Neck (NTN) category out of 232 seats which went to the polls on May 16. Of the Others, the Third Front is set to win three seats, PMK 2 and BJP 1.
