Chennai:
Elections to Aravakurichi and Thanjavur constituencies, scheduled to be held on May 23, have been postponed, the Election Commission informed the Madras High Court on May 20.
A new date will be announced later after consulting the candidates, the EC informed the court. The EC had deferred the polls in the Aravakurichi Assembly constituency, in Karur district, following widespread seizure of cash and complaints of voters being bribed.
In Thanjavur too, the election was put off following seizure of huge sums of cash and reports about large-scale distribution of money to voters.
The EC had earlier directed that polls be held on May 23, and counting for these two seats on May 25.
The PMK candidate for Aravakurichi election and the BJP candidate for Thanjavur election had filed petitions in the Madras High Court against conduct of the elections on May 23.
