Three people were killed and nearly 50 others injured in a stampede in front of Rajaji Hall where thousands of people had gathered to get a last glimpse of the departed DMK leader M Karunanidhi. The police resorted to a lathicharge after steps to control the crowd failed. The injured were rushed to hospital where they are undergoing treatment.

Former Rajya Sabha member N Rajendran, who hailed from Kovilpatti in Tuticorin district of Tamil Nadu, was found dead in his car with a bullet injury. The Kovilpatti West police, who seized a pistol from the vehicle, said Rajendran might have committed suicide.
