Chennai:
Three people were killed and nearly 50 others injured several injured in a stampede in front of Rajaji Hall where thousands of people had gathered to get a last glimpse of the departed DMK leader M Karunanidhi. The police resorted to a lathicharge after steps to control the crowd failed. The injured were rushed to hospital where they are undergoing treatment.
There were frequent clashes between police personnel and DMK cadres after the barricades were pushed aside. A large number of people climbed the steps leading to the Rajaji Hall, and got close to the body, creating tense moments for the security forces and the DMK leaders. Members of the Karunanidhi family and DMK leaders were seen holding on to the casket to prevent it from sliding down the steps of the hall.
DMK working president M K Stalin appealed to the people to remain calm, but criticized the State government for creating chaos at the venue and providing inadequate security.
