Chief Minister Edappadi Palanisamy comfortably won the vote of confidence in the Tamil Nadu Assembly, shortly after DMK unleashed an orgy of violence against Speaker P Dhanapal, with 122 votes for the motion , and 11 against (cast by the dissident group led by O Panneerselvam).

The AIADMK Legislature Party got a shot in the arm in their fight against rebel O Panneerselvam as Tamil Nadu Governor C Vidyasagar Rao finally invited the LP leader Edapaddi K Palaniswami to form the government. The Governor, bowing at least to the sheer weight of numbers in favour of the LP, asked EPS to seek a vote of confidence in the Assembly within 15 days.

AIADMK legislature party leader and general secretary Edappadi Palanisamy met Governor C Vidyasagar Rao at the Raj Bhavan here this evening and staked his claim to form a new government. He is said to have handed over a copy of the LP resolution, unanimously electing him as the LP leader, and a list of 126 party MLAs who were supporting him.

The BJP, which has been working on a plan to split the AIADMK ever since the death of Jayalalithaa is using O Panneerselvam to do a Manjhi in Tamil Nadu. This is an almost replica of the Bihar operation in which Jitan Ram Manjhi, who was entrusted the chief ministership by JDU leader Nitish Kumar and was later asked to resign in favour of Nitish, refused to step down, and claimed he had majority support in the Assembly with the help of the BJP, a pliant Governor who toed the Centre line, and PM.
