The DMK stormed back to power in Tamil Nadu after a gap of 10 years, with its president M K Stalin set to take over as chief minister on May 7 at a simple ceremony at the Raj Bhavan. The DMK-led front won 159 of the 234 seats up for grabsin the April 6 elections, counting for which was taken up on May 2 and 3, 2021. The AIADMK had to bow out of power, coming down from 134 in the previous House to just 66 now. Edappadi Palaniswami submitted his resignation as chief minister.

In a close tussle which could be crucial for survival of the AIADMK government in Tamil Nadu, the DMK leads in 11 and AIADMK in 11 Assembly bypolls, trends for which are available for the 22 Assembly bypolls in Tamil Nadu held on April 18 and May 19. For the moment, the AIADMK appears to have done enough to survive this battle.

The Supreme Court has refused to transfer the case of disqualification against AIADMK MLAs supporting T T V Dinakaran. A petition was filed by disqualified MLAs supporting Dinakaran seeking to transfer the case from the Madras High Court to the Supreme Court. However, the court said the case could be transferred to a new judge, Justice M Sathyanarayana, replacing Justice S Vimala.

The Tamil Nadu government has announced that the much-anticipated All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) will come up at Thoppur near Madurai at an estimated cost of Rs 1,500 crore.
