Heavy rains batter Tamil Nadu

Chennai:
Heavy rains continued to batter Tamil Nadu especially its northern region including Chennai on December 1 under the influence of a trough of low over Southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining South Andaman sea. Chennai, which received 39.5 mm on November 30, has received nearly 50 mm rain from 8.30 a.m. on December 1.
Authorities have stepped up release of water from Madurantakam lave at the rate of 14,000 cubic feet per second. A flood alert had been issued by authorities in Tiruvalluvar and Kancheepuram. Tiruvalluvar collector Veeraghava Rao said Kosasthaliyar river had been flooded, water had reached danger level, and water was being released from Kosasthaliyar at the rate of 20,000 cubic ft per second. Arani river too was flooded. People in low-lying areas had been asked to move to shelters being provided by the government and local bodies. Flood waters were entering homes in low-lying areas. The Tiruttani causeway had been damaged.
Water discharge from Chembarambakkam had been increased from 3,000 to 5,000 cubic ft per second, which means that Adyar river flowing across suburbs and main areas of Chennai would be swollen, rasing danger levels on the banks of Adyar river. Chennai Collector has advised people living in these areas to move to places of safety.
Release of water from Poondi and Red Hills, two main drinking water reservoirs for Chennai, had also been increased.
Suburban train services in north Chennai had been affected.
Traffic on Roads from Tiruttani to Kancheepuram had been closed.
Yesterday’s trough of low over Southeast Bay and adjoining South Andaman sea has moved westwards and now lies over Southwest Bay and neighbourhood. Yesterday’s trough of low over Southwest Bay and adjoining Srilanka has merged with above system.
Northeast monsoon has been vigorous over Tamil Nadu, Rayalaseema and active over Kerala. Yesterday’s trough of low over Southeast Bay and adjoining South Andaman sea has moved westwards and now lies over Southwest Bay and neighbourhood.
Yesterday’s trough of low over Southwest Bay and adjoining Srilanka has merged with above system.
Adilabad recorded the lowest minimum temperature of 15 degree Celsius in the plains of the region.
Moderate to rather heavy rain would occur at most places over all the districts of North Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and at many places over South Tamil Nadu.
