The depression over South West Bay of Bengal has moved north-northwards and lay centred about 170 km south east of Nellore in Andhra Pradesh, and may intensify into a cyclone which would cross the coast between Andhra Pradesh and Orissa coast later on May 18 evening.

The depression over South West Bay of Bengal moved northwards in the last six hours and lay centred about 90 km east of Chennai and 70 km from the coast. Metmen have warned that this could intensify into a deep depression or even a cyclone.

The MeT department said the low pressure area over Bay of Bengal has intensified into a depression and is likely to bring heavy rainfall in the next two days in coastal areas of the state. Parts of Tamil Nadu continued to receive rains for the second day on May 17.
