The ruling BJP was ousted from power in Jharkhand, as the JMM-Congress-RJD combine swept the Assembly elections, leading in 47 of the 81 seats that went to the polls in December 2019. Hemant Soren of the Jharkhand Mukthi Morcha is expected to form a coalition government with the Congress and the Rashtriya Janata Dal.

The DMK virtually rejected an alliance with the Congress by unilterally announcing its list of 35 candidates for the Lok Sabha polls, even while renominating 2G scam accused A Raja and Dayanidhi Maran. Party chief M Karunanidhi released the list of party candidates for Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. It left five seats to its allies, VCK, IUML, MMK and PT.
