The new AIADMK government headed by CM Edappadi Palaniswami announced several welfare schemes, aimed at fulfilling late CM J Jayalalithaa's promises before the 2016 Assembly polls. Important announcements made by EPS were grant of Rs 20,000 subsidy to one lakh working women every year for the purchase of mopeds or scooters and the closure of 500 more liquor shops.

The AIADMK Legislature Party got a shot in the arm in their fight against rebel O Panneerselvam as Tamil Nadu Governor C Vidyasagar Rao finally invited the LP leader Edapaddi K Palaniswami to form the government. The Governor, bowing at least to the sheer weight of numbers in favour of the LP, asked EPS to seek a vote of confidence in the Assembly within 15 days.
