A high-level team from the Delhi Police Crime Branch served summons on former deputy general secretary of AIADM (Amma) party, T T V Dhinakaran, in connection with the Rs 50 crore bribery charge to secure the AIADMK Two Leaves symbol from the Election Commission.
The Crime Branch police from Delhi reached Chennai on April 19 night and served the summons on Dhinakaran at his Adyar residence in Chennai. The police had filed an FIR against middleman Sukesh Chandrasekhar and Dhinakaran.
Sukesh Chandrasekhar is said to have revealed that he received payment from Dhinakaran in return for securing the Two Leaves symbol for his party. The EC had frozen the symbol ahead of the RK Nagar Assembly by-poll originally scheduled for April 12.
The election was postponed by the EC after Health minister Vijayabhaskar's residence in Chennai was raided by Income-Tax department when it was found that over Rs 89 crore had been disbursed to voters in the constituency.
Sukesh Chnadrasekhar was arrested from a luxury hotel in New Delhi and cash totalling Rs 1.30 crore recovered from him.
The Delhi Police on Monday filed a case against Dhinakaran for attempting to bribe Election Commission officials for getting a favourable order for his faction in the "Two Leaves" symbol case.
A case was filed against Dhinakaran under Section 8 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, which deals with taking gratification, by corrupt or illegal means, to influence public servant and Section 120 B (criminal conspiracy) of Indian Penal Code. Dhinakaran, who returned from Bengaluru on Tuesday morning, held consultations with his lawyer Jeenasenan and a few others to discuss strategy on how to handle the Delhi crime branch case.
Sukesh had apparently promised Dhinakaran of AIADMK's Sasikala faction that he would influence Election Commission to obtain a favourable order for them in lieu of consideration of Rs 50 crore, Madhur Verma, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime), Delhi Police, had said on Monday.
There was commotion for a while as a party worker, Ravichandran, attempted to set himelf on fire when the Delhi police arrived at Dhinakaran's residence to serve the summons on the former MP. However, others near him prevented the attempt and he was whisked away by the city police.
