UK expert Dr. Beale, Intensivist, joins team to treat Jayalalithaa

Chennai: Dr. Richard John Beale, Consultant Intensivist at the London Bridge Hospital, has been drafted by the private hospital in Chennai to treat Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa, giving an indication of the kind of ailment she suffers from. He visited the hospital on Friday to assess her condition, and continued to check on her on Saturday.

Dr Beale is considered to be a specialist on multi-organ failure, acute lung injury, sepsis and general intensive care.

An internationally renowned specialist and researcher, he will be available for further consultation over the next couple of days to the team of doctors attending on the Chief Minister.

Dr Richard John Beale is Clinical Director of Perioperative, Critical care & Pain Services and Consultant Intensivist at Guy’s and St.
Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, St Thomas’ Hospital, London.

Dr Beale received his Medical degree from St Bartholomew’s Hospital, London, in 1984. He undertook his General Professional
Training in Anaesthetics at Guy’s Hospital, London and was accordingly admitted to the Fellowship of the Royal College of
Anaesthetists in 1990.

Having registered as a specialist in anaesthetics and intensive care, he held the posts of Clinical Research Fellow and Honorary
Senior Registrar in Intensive Care at Guy’s Hospital, London, until 1992 when he embarked on his Higher Professional Training in
Anaesthesia at the Royal London Hospital. He became a consultant in Intensive Care at Guy’s & St. Thomas Hospital Trust in 1995,
becoming Head of Service for Adult Intensive Care Unit in 2000.  In March 2005 he was made Head of Perioperative, Critical Care
and Pain Services (now Clinical Director) across the Trust and continues to hold this post.

He has acted as principle investigator in a large number of multicentre research studies in the fields of sepsis, ARDS and clinical
nutrition. He maintains up to date training in ICH GCP and the EU Clinical Trials Directive.

He was one of the European Society of  Intensive Care Medicine’s representatives on the Steering Committee of  the Surviving
Sepsis Campaign, and remains on the Publications Committee.
