New Delhi:
The Election Commission of India has put off polling in the Thanjavur Assembly constituency of Tamil Nadu to May 23. Polling was set to begin at 7 a.m. on May 16.
The orders were issued late on May 15 following seizure of huge sums of cash and reports about large-scale distribution of money to voters.
"The polling in the constituency has been deferred so that the vitiating effect of the money power created by the distribution of money and gifts to electors loses its intensity and a more congenial atmosphere conducive to the conduct of free and fair election is created," said an EC official.
The Commission has directed that the poll in the constituency be held on May 23, instead of May 16. The counting of votes will take place on May 25.
The Election Commission earlier deferred elections in the Aravakurichi Assembly constituency to May 23 following seizure of huge sums of cash and complaints alleging that voters were being bribed. The EC said over Rs.6.75 crore had been seized in the constituency.
