Chennai:
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J jayalalithaa on November 16 visited a few flood-affected areas in Chennai including R K Nagar (her constituency), Kolathur, Ambattur and Madhavaram, and assured the people that relief measures are being undertaken on a war footing.
Addressing the people from her vehicle in R K Nagar constituency, she said the city had experienced rains in the three last days which it normally should receive over three months. In that sense, the rains were unprecedented and even though the government agencies and local bodies had taken precautionary measures, it is not possible to prevent the damage due to heavy rains.
She said more than 40 pumps and six giant suckers were working overtime to pump out water from low-lying areas. Officials were working round the clock without any sleep to help the people, she added.
She also visited the constituency of DMK Treasurer M K Stalin, Kolathur, in surburban Chennai and assured the people of relief measures. Stalin had criticized the Chief Minister and the AIADMK for not taking adequate steps to prevent the flooding of Chennai and also not undertaking relief works, and had questioned why Jayalalithaa had not visited affected areas, including her own constituency.
