Chennai:
Chennai: Cracks in the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) unit in Tamil Nadu have widened over Prime Minister Narendra Modi ignoring leaders of alliance parties like DMDK and MDMK for the dinner being hosted by him in New Delhi on October 25, 2014.
Speaking to mediapersons at Chennai Airport, MDMK general secretary Vaiko was critical of the lack of coordination among the NDA allies after the Lok Sabha elections.
The NDA had not met since the Union government formation, Vaiko said adding that there was just a meeting for name sake before the swearing-in of Modi. The allies were not called for any other meeting or consultation, Vaiko added. Things were not the same now as they were when Atal Bihari Vajpayee and L K Advani were in charge of the BJP, he said. However, he was quick to add that the MDMK remained a part of the NDA.
Sources in the DMDK said it was unhappy that the party had been left out while PMK had received an invite. PMK leader Anbumani Ramadoss, though invited, would not attend the dinner due to personal commitments, it is said.
Meanwhile, at a meeting of DMDK party district secretaries in Chennai on October 24, Vijayakant said he would be the chief ministerial candidate of the party for the 2016 Assembly polls.
Vijayakanth said that with both the DMK and the AIADMK in the dock due to corruption charges, the DMDK could fill the political vacuum.
He urged partymen not to be slack.
Vijayakant said organisational changes would be made in the DMDK to reduce the number of office-bearers in the districts and avoid confusion in implementing the instructions of the leadership.
