Chennai:
Several ministers turned emotional and were seen wiping tears from their eyes at the swearing-in ceremony of the new cabinet which took charge on September 29 following the exit of the previous ministry led by jailed J Jayalalithaa.
The new chief minister, O Panneerselvam, himself was emotional and struggled to read out the text of the oath of office and secrecy. He was seen taking out his handkerchief and wiping his eyes while taking the oath of office.
B Valarmathi visibly broke down while being sworn in.
It was a sombre mood at the swearing in. There were no smiles, hugs or hand-shakes.
In fact, there were no proper invites for the swearing-in ceremony even to the media. The customary list of leaders of legislature parties was given the go-by perhaps due to paucity of time.
All morning, there were reports that Panneerselvam and others would turn up at the Raj Bhavan for the swearing-in ceremony but there was no confirmation of the time.
Panneerselvam retained the 30 other ministers appointed by his predecessor J Jayalalithaa, with all of them holding the same portfolios earlier allocated by her.
Panneerselvam, who held the Finance and Public Works portfolios earlier, will now handle Jayalalithaa's portfolios as well -- departments of Public, Indian Administrative Service, Indian Police Service, Indian Forest Service, General Administration, District Revenue Officers, Police and Home.
