Chennai:
Barely a few hours after DMK Treasurer M K Stalin sent in his resignation from all party posts owning moral responsibility for the poor performance of the party in the Lok Sabha polls, his father and party president M Karunanidhi rejected it and asked him to continue.
Stalin "has decided not to insist on his resignation from the Treasurer’s post", the party’s deputy general secretary, Durai Murugan told prespersons in Chennai on Sunday evening, in response to Karunanidhi's advice. Seniors from the party including K Ponmudi and E V Velu had met Stalin and requested him to withdraw the resignation.
Stalin’s resignation had come even as his brother and rival in the party, M K Alagiri, criticised Stalin's leadership and choice of candidates for the elections. Karunanidhi, in the run-up to the elections, had annouced the dismissal of Alagiri from the DMK.
Durai Murugan had pointed out to Stalin that “one defeat will not sink the DMK”. Durai Murugan had said that the party looked forward to Stalin's guidance and leadership and therefore he should not take a drastic decision.
Partymen had gathered in large numbers at Stalin's Teynampet residence and demanded that he withdraw the resignation.
A section of the party had privately questioned Stalin's decision not to accept an alliance with the Congress.
