Carnatic vocalist and teacher Suguna Purushothaman passes away

Carnatic vocalist and teacher Suguna Purushothaman:
Chennai: Senior Carnatic vocalist and guru Suguna Purusothaman, who hailed from the Musiri school of music, died here on February 25. She was 74. She is survived by her husband and two daughters. She was undergoing treatment for cancer.
Suguna was born in Ponvilainthakalathur in Chengalpattu. She was trained by late Musiri Subramania Iyer, under a Central Government scholarship in the 1960s.
Suguna was known as a good composer.
She also learnt from mridangist Thinniyam Venkatrama Iyer. She learnt music under Musiri Subramania Iyer. She studied aong with Mani Krishnasamy, Suguna Varadhachari, Padma Narayanasamy and Rukmini Ramani.
Suguna was an expert in pallavi singing and had a great flair for layam, pointed out Thyagarajan, the grandson of Musiri Subramania Iyer.
