Jaya announces free bus pass scheme for senior citizens

Chennai: Tamil Nadu chief minister J jayalalithaa has announced a free bus pass scheme for senior citizens travelling in government transport corporation buses in Chennai from February 24.

The commencement of the scheme coincides with her 68th birthday on February 24.

The free bus pass scheme would be extended to 10 other cities, she announced in the Tamil Nadu Assembly on February 18.

Senior citizens can access the bus pass card and tokens for the travel from designated bus depots, she said adding that they could get 10 tokens a month. The forms for the bus pass would also be made available online, she said.

It is not yet known if the tokens would restrict the free travel to ten times or ten days.

Jayalalithaa stated in the Assembly that with this announcementthat the government had implemented all the promises made in the election manifesto before the 2011 polls.
