The Supreme Court on Tuesday slammed the Tamil Nadu government for allowing people to defy its order on jallikattu, and for failing to maintain law and order in the state. The court had banned the controversial sport in 2014, on the grounds that it was cruel to bulls.

The Animal Welfare Board of India has moved the Supreme Court challenging the new Act allowing the traditional sport of Jallikattu in Tamil Nadu. The court has listed the matter for January 30 along with the Centre’s plea to withdraw the 2016 notification allowing Jallikattu.

Two persons were killed and 82 others suffered minor injuries during Jallikattu in Tamil Nadu’s Pudukottai district on January 22 as the Tamil Nadu Government said the ban on Jallikattu events had been lifted through the ordinance. One person died due to dehydration in Madurai during protests, police said.
