Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa on August 11, 2014, honoured seven sportspersons of the State for having won medals in the recent Glasgow Commonwealth Games. The cash incentive amounted to Rs 2.70 crore.
Participating in a function at the State Secretariat here, she presented cheques for Rs. 50 lakh each to S Satheesh Kumar, weightlifter, who won the gold medal in the 77-kg category; Joshna Chinappa and Dipika Pallikal, squash players who bagged the women’s doubles gold medal.
The chief minister also Jayalalithaa gave away cheques for Rs. 30 lakh each to Achanta Sharath Kamal and Anthony Amalraj, table tennis players, who bagged the silver medal in the men’s doubles section, and Rupinder Pal Singh and Sreejesh Parattu Raveendran, members of the Indian hockey team for clinching the silver medal.
She also congratulated the players individually and told them, “You have brought glory and pride for the State of Tamil Nadu and for the country.” She wished them “greater and greater success.”
