Chennai:
P Saravanan (DMK) has bagged the Tiruparankundram Assembly constituency in the byelection held in Tamil Nadu. He finished ahead of his nearest AIADMK rival, S Muniyandi (AIADMK) by 2,396 votes.
The DMK candidate secured 85,434 votes (37.79 per cent) as against 83,038 votes of Muniyandi (36.73 per cent).
Saravanan had challenged the election of AIADMK candidate in the by-election held after general elections in 2016, on the ground that AIADMK leader J jayalalithaa’s signature was not obtained, and what was affixed was her fingerprint, which was against election procedure. Recently, Saravanan, who had challenged the election verdict in court, withdrew it to enable by-election to be held in this constituency too.
Among others trailing were I Mahendran (AMMK), P. Sakthivel (MNM) and Revathy R (NTK).
The seat was held by AIADMK in 2016.
22 Assembly constituencies are up for grabs in the by-elections in Tamil Nadu.
