Puducherry:
The Congress-led government in Puducherry is relieved as its Lok Sabha candidate, Speaker V. Vaithilingam established an early lead for the lone seat in Puducherry. Vaithilingam was ahead of K. Narayanasamy of AINRC, who is being supported by several parties of the AIADMK-led front including the BJP.
The battle is crucial for Chief Minister V. Narayanasamy, who is threatened by Lt Governor Kiran Bedi in what the Congress describes as a BJP plot to destabilize its government and bring in a BJP-government through the backdoor.
The Congress is supported by the DMK, MDMK, Left parties, VBCK, IUML among others.
The Congress lost to AINRC’s R. Radhakrishnan in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections by a margin of 60,854 votes.
