Chennai:
The Election Commission has ordered postponement of RK Nagar by-election scheduled for April 12 following reports of large-scale distribution of cash and gifts, particularly by the ruling AIADMK (Amma) and raids of residences and offices of Health Minister Vijayabhaskar.
The atmosphere was vitiated for polls, and new date would be announced, the EC announcement said
The EC observers are believed to have sent reports on the raids, recovery of cash and incriminating documents revealing payments of over Rs 89 crore to voters in RK Nagar. The IT department raids revealed that the names of the Chief Minister and six ministers were mentioned in cash with the cash transactions, the department said.
The Minister has been asked to depose before the IT department on Monday morning regarding the raids and the reports of the reported cash transactions.
Various political parties had asked the EC to take action against the violations, particularly cash distribution and gifts offered as bribes to voters.
