The Maran brothers, former Union Telecom minister Dayanidhi and Kalanithi Maran, were on Februaqry 2 discharged in the Aircel-Maxis case. The Patiala House court found no ground to proceed against Maran and the other accused.
The cases were probed by the Central Bureau of Investigation and the Enforcement Directorate. The CBI had probed the corruption case, while the ED investigated the money laundering charges.
The court was to frame charges against the Maran brothers.
The CBI in its charge sheet had alleged that Dayanidhi Maran had entered into a criminal conspiracy with T. Ananda Krishnan, owner of Malaysian company Maxis, and coerced Chinnakannan Sivasankaran, owner of Aircel, to sell his shares to the former in lieu of investments by the foreign company through another company into Sun Direct TV Pvt. Ltd.
The ED alleged that Rs. 742.58 crore was paid for Dayanidhi Maran by two Mauritius-based companies through Sun Direct TV Pvt. Ltd and South Asia FM Ltd, companies of Kalanithi Maran, and the money was utilised by these companies for business purposes.
Dayanidhi Maran is one of the promoters of Sun Direct.
"I discharge all the accused in the two cases," Special Judge O .P. Saini said in his brief order.
Dayanidhi and Kalanithi are sons for former Union minister and DMK leader Murasoli Maran, nephew of DMK president and former TN chief minister M Karunanidhi.
