Severe cyclonic storm Vardah to cross north TN AP coast

Cyclonic storm Vardah, which has now intensified into a severe cyclonic storm, is expected to cross the North Tamil Nadu-south Andhra Pradesh coast on Monday afternoon, weathermen have said. North Tamil Nadu had already received over 5 cm rainfall in the last 24 hours.
According to a forecast by the India Meteorological Department, the landfall will be accompanied by strong winds at the speed of 80 to 90 kmph and heavey to very heavy rainfall, an IMD release said.
North Tamil Nadu and South AP coast were receiving heavy rains, accompanied by strong winds, right from Sunday night.
The Centre has dispatched NDRF personnel to Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. A team of NDRF comprising around 40 personnel had been stationed in Nellore, AP, one in Tada, one in Sulurpeta, one in Ongole, and another in Chitpore district.
Another team is moving to Sulurpeta while teams are on standby in Guntur and Hyderabad.
Three NDRF teams were already in position in Chennai, two in Tamil Nadu’s Thiruvallur, one in Mamallapuram. Another team is on its way to Chennai while a team is on stand by at Arakkonam.
Rainfall at most places with isolated heavy to very heavy falls over south coastal Andhra Pradesh, north coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry was likely during the next 36 hours. The rainfall intensity will increase gradually becoming heavy to very heavy rainfall (7-19 cm) at a few places and isolated extremely heavy rainfall, around 20 cms, over Chennai, Thiruvallur and Kanchipuram districts of Tamil Nadu and Nellore and Prakasam districts of Andhra Pradesh on December 12. Squally winds speed reaching 40-50 kmph gusting to 60, are expected.
The weather system is about 180 kms east-northeast of Chennai and 300 km east-southeast of Nellore. It is very likely to cross north Tamil Nadu and south Andhra Pradesh coasts, close to Chennai as a cyclonic storm with a wind speed of up to 100 kmph by Monday noon.
InAndhra Pradesh, Masula received its first spell of rainfall, while farmers were worried about standing paddy as heavy winds are expected.
Manginapudi beach is closed for visitors for next 48 hours.
Fishing operations had been suspended here.
