Chennai:
The ruling AIADMK, though handicapped by the absence of its chief minister and party supremo J Jayalalithaa, has won all three Assembly seats for which elections were held on November 19. When counting of votes was taken up this morning for the Aravakurichi, Thanjavur and Thiruparankundram constituencies of the Tamil Nadu Assembly, AIADMK established early leads and went on to consolidate it.
AIADMK candidate M Rangasamy defeated Anjugam Bhoopathy (DMK) in Thanjavur.
The AIADMK also won in Tiruparankundram, with its candidate A K Bose defeating P Saravanan of the DMK.
In Aravakurichi, AIADMK candidate, former minister, Senthil Balaji triumphed, overcoming his nearest DMK rival, K C Pallani Shamy.
Polling was held on November 19.
The elections in Thanjavur and Aravakurichi were held after the Election Commission of India rescinded the polls in May in the wake of large scale bribing of voters by political parties.
The bypoll in Tirupparankundram constituency in Madurai district was caused by the death of S M Seenivel of AIADMK died before taking oath as a member of the Assembly after the May 16 election.
The DMDK and the BJP also contested the polls in Tamil Nadu. The MNF (People's Welfare Front) kept away from the elections.
