AIADMK leads in byelections for TN Assembly

Chennai: Counting of votes in Aravakurichi, Thanjavur and Thiruparankundram constituencies of the Tamil Nadu Assembly began at 8 a.m on
Tuesday, November 22, 2016. AIADMK candidate M Rangasamy was ahead in Thanjavur with 29 postal ballot votes. Anjugam
Bhoopathy of DMK has secured only 1 postal ballot.  The AIADMK was also leading in Tiruparankundram constituency when postal
ballots wwere counted. AIADMK bagged 44 votes against 1 of the DMK here.

Postal votes were being counted first.

Polling was held on November 19.

Counting of votes polled in Aravakurichi was on at M Kumarasamy College of Engineering in Karur while in Thanjavur, it was being  
held at Kundavai Nachiaar Govt Arts College for Women. In Thiruparankundram, the counting was on at at Madurai Medical College,
chief electoral officer Rajesh Lakhoni said on Monday.
    
"A total of 225 personnel are deployed for counting at all three counting centres. While in Aravakurichi there will be 18 rounds of
counting, in Thanjavur there will be 20 rounds. In Thiruparankundram there will be a maximum of 21 rounds. All the three
constituencies will have 14 tables on which the votes will be counted," said Lakhoni.

After each of counting, copy of result from each table will be given to counting agents of political parties, and candidate-wise votes
would be tallied before commencement of the next round of counting.

Former minister V Senthil Balaji of AIADMK and K C Palanisamy of DMK are the main candidates in Aravakurichi. M Rangasamy of

AIADMK and Anjugam Bhoopathi of DMK are the main contestants in Thanjavur. The elections in Thanjavur and Aravakurichi were
held after the Election Commission of India rescinded the polls in May in the wake of large scale bribing of voters by political parties.

The bypoll in Tirupparankundram constituency in Madurai district was caused by the death of S M Seenivel of AIADMK died before
taking oath as a member of the Assembly after the May 16 election. The main contenders in this constituency are A K Bose of
AIADMK and P Saravanan of DMK.

The DMDK and the BJP are also contesting the polls. The MNF (People's Welfare Front) has kept away from the elections.
