New Delhi:
Congress president Sonia Gandhi has accepted the resignation of TNCC president E V K S Elangovan.
The president of TNCC, Elangovan, had submitted his resignation to the party High Command on June 25, following the failure of the party in the recent elections to the Tamil Nadu Assembly.
The Congress was allotted 41 seats by the DMK in an alliance for the May elections. However, while the DMK won a large number of seats – 98 – and came close to forming the government, it was led down by its main ally, the Congress, which was victorious only 8 of the 41 seats it contested in.
Although there was a mood in favour of the DMK in many constituencies, the Congress could not capitalise on this due to a weak organisation, poor selection of candidates and lack of workers at the grassroots. Groupism in the party had also affected its performance.
Most of the groups in the TNCC favour replacement of Elangovan as they say he has been functioning in a dictatorialmanner, dismissing functionaries including DCC president in an arbitrary manner. Recently, he had also dismissed Vishnu Prasad, the son of former PCC president Krishnasamy, which has added fuel to the fire.
The AICC is expected to announce the new PCC chief shortly. Congress leaders like P Chidambaram, K V Thangkabalu, Kumari Ananthan and MLAs like Vasantha Kumar, have been demanding a change in PCC leadership.
