Puducherry votes for Congress, DMK government

Updated by admin on Thursday, May 19, 2016 04:34 PM IST

Puducherry: The people of Puducherry have voted for a Congress-DMK government, with the alliance winning 17 seats in the 30-member Assembly. The AINRC won 8 seats on its own, and the AIADMK 4, while an Independent supported by the Third Front is victorious.

Chief Minister N Rangasamy demits office, mainly due to his failure to stitch an alliance, particularly with the AIADMK. The two parties came to power in 2011 on the basis of an alliance. Having parted ways now, they lost out. On the other hand,  the coming together of the DMK and the Congress enabled the two parties to forge ties and fight the elections together. This alliance has paid dividends for both the parties.

The Congress has won 15 seats and the DMK 2. Once the government is formed, three persons could be nominated to the Assembly and this would give added strength, space and leverage to the combine.
