Chennai:
The ruling AIADMK is set to retain power in Tamil Nadu under the stewardship of Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, with the party leading in 135 constituencies out of 232 seats for which elections were held on May 16.
The rival DMK alliance which includes the Congress, MMK, PT, IUML among others is leading in 86 seats (DMK 75, Congress 10, Puthiya Tamizhagam 1). The Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) is leading in 3 constituencies. Leads for 8 other constituencies are not yet known.
AIADMK needs 118 seats in the 234-member House.
This time the AIADMK has virtually gone it alone, giving up its 2011 allies like DMDK, CPI, CPM, MMK and PT. Some of these parties formed the Third Front to take on both the AIADMK and DMK but could not make inroads.
