Chennai:
Pala Karuppiah, MLA, submitted his resignation from the Tamil Nadu Assembly a day after he was expelled from the AIADMK.
Speaking to mediapersons, Karuppiah urged Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa to implement prohibition in Tamil Nadu, at least now that the government’s term is coming to an end. If Rs. 30,000 crore is the amount gained from the liquor sale, imagine how many people could be drunkards, he said adding it would be dangerous for the State to have such a large consumption of alcohol.
Karuppiah said the AIADMK leader’s style of functioning and his own differed. He pointed out that she made him am an MLA despite opposition.
Karuppiah said it would not be fair on his part to continue as an MLA after she removed him from the party. “I apologise to the people of my constituency for being unable to function properly,” he added. Asked about the reason for his expulsion, he felt an interview he had given a Tamil magazine could be the reason. “I am quite outspoken and have been pointing out various issues, which was not liked,” he said.
AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa removed Harbour MLA Pala. Karuppiah from all positions of the party, including the primary membership, for bringing disrepute to the party.
In a statement, Ms. Jayalalithaa said he had functioned contrary to the party’s ideology and principles and in an undignified manner and asked partymen not to have any truck with him.
Party sources said his sacking was imminent after he publicly criticised the behaviour of Ministers and spoke about how politicians and bureaucrats were hand-in-hand in looting the public.
