Chennai:
The Tamil Nadu unit of BJP, which was desperately wooing actor Rajinikanth with a view to rope him into the party, received a massive jolt when he sent AIADMK supremo a warm and personal greeting on her release from Bengaluru prison and return to her Chennai residence. A further shock came when Union minister Maneka Gandhi broke ranks to say she was sorry over her imprisonment and conveying her hope that she would be "formally back at the helm of administration again".
In his letter, which also conveyed his Deepavali greeting, the Superstar said he was “very glad” to see her back in Chennai.
“Respected Jayalalithaaji,” he said adding “always wishing you well for good health and peace”.
While the BJP leaders were moving heaven and earth to bring him into the party in the hope that he could be its mascot for the 2016 polls, Rajni's letter to Jayalalithaa has put paid to the party's hopes of his political role.
Industry sources, however, said tongue and cheek that this was typical of Rajni as he needed the support of the state government in the run-up to the release of his new film. This time too, he doesn't want any obstacle in the way of Linga, his next release. While his films received governmental support in terms of higher ticket rate permission for the first week or two, exemption from entertainment tax etc., Some others like Udhayanadhi Stalin, Kamal Haasan and Vijay were not so fortunate.
Union minister for Women and Child Development Maneka Gandhi, in her letter to Jayalalithaa said she was deeply sorry that this (the imprisonment) took place. Conveying her support and sympathy, Maneka said if there was anything she could do to help overcome the suffering, she would be happy to do so.
Maneka said Jayalalithaa had always managed through discipline and courage to overcome the odds, and was sure, “we will see you formally back at the helm of administration again.”
“Take care of your health and remember that you have many admirers across the country,” Maneka added.
