AIADMK chief J Jayalalithaa, convicted by a Bengaluru special court but granted bail by the Supreme Court in the disproportionate assets case, was released from Bengaluru prison on completion of bail formalities, and reached her Poes Garden residence in Chennai later in the evening.
The surety and other formalities for the bail sanction were completed by the legal team for Jayalalithaa and three close aides, Sasikala, V N Sudhagaran and J Ilavarasi, after special court judge, John Michael Cunha issued orders for their release on bail.
The order copies were submitted to the Bengaluru prison authorities to expedite the release on Saturday afternoon.
Tamil nadu chief minister O Panneerselvam, senior cabient colleagues and party functionaries were among those who greeted Jayalalithaa on her release from the prison.
The special court had convicted Jayalalithaa to a four-year jail term and a fine of Rs 100 crore, while her aides were awarded a four-year jail term with a fine of Rs 10 crore each.
Tight security was ensured near the Agrahara central prison, Bengaluru police said. Over 1,000 cops had been posted on duty here, Additional Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Alok Kumar said.
