Karnataka HC rejects Jaya bail plea

Bengaluru:
Bengaluru: Karnataka High Court has rejected the bail plea of former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on the ground that corruption is an evil force and a violation of human rights with the Supreme Court having stated recently that corruption needs to be tackled on a fast track.

J Jayalalithaa will stay in jail for now. The Karnataka High Court judge, Mr Justice Chandrasekhara, turned down the bail plea referring to the Supreme Court taking a serious view of corruption. A special court in Bengaluru had on September 27, 2014, sentenced Jayalalithaa to a four-year jail term and a fine of Rs 100 crore, while her close aides Sasikala Natarajan, relatives Ilavarasi and V N Sudhagaran (former adopted son of Jayalalithaa) to a jail term of four years each and a fine of Rs 10 crore each.

On October 7, Mr Justice Chandrasekhara of the Karnataka High Court heard the pleas of Ram Jethmalani, lawyer for Jayalalithaa, and the lawyers for Sasikala, Sudhagaran and Ilavarasi, besides the Special Public Prosecutor, Bhavani Singh. There is some confusion as to whether Bhavani Singh was not opposed to conditional bail. This was given a twist by advocates of Jayalalithaa who rushed to waiting mediapersons and claimed that conditional bail had been granted to Jaya.

This set off celebrations by AIADMK workers in Bengaluru near the prison and in many parts of Tamil Nadu as well.

However, the celebrations were short-lived and despondency set in. There were sporadic protests in some parts of the State by AIADMK workers.
