Madurai:
Tamil National Front leader P Nedumaran has taken exception to former Supreme Court judge Markandey Katju's statement that Sanskrit can unite the nation. Sanskrit, spoken and written by less than one per cent of the national population, cannot unite the nation, Nedumaran pointed out.
Nedumaran charged, "The BJP-led government’s directive to Central Schools to observe Sanskrit Week showed its imperialistic nature.” The Constitution has 22 scheduled languages, and there was no need for the Centre give special status to Sanskrit and not to other languages, he pointed out.
The move will only create disintegration in a nation that speaks several languages, he said, adding that the Centre ignored other languages while spending Rs. 120 crore every year on Sanksrit.
Nedumaran said the Centre’s proposal to allow 100 per cent FDI (foreign direct investment) in the Railways was a reversal of former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru’s drive to nationalise the railways.
The appeasement policy of the Centre towards Sri Lanka would not do the country any good, he said.
The increased presence of China in Sri Lanka would pose a threat not just to India but to the entire world trade through the Indian Ocean.
