Udhagamandalam:
The BJP's attempt to represent the Nilgiris Parliamentary Constituency in the Lok Sabha and to oppose the 2G scam accused DMK's A Raja came a cropper on April 7 as the nomination paper of its candidate S Gurumurthy was rejected during scrutiny.
District Election Officer and Nilgiris Collector P Sankar said the papers were examined by the officials concerned in the presence of the party's representatives, and it was found that rules relating to the filing of nominations had not been followed.
Forms A and B regarding the authorisation of the party to contest the elections were not submitted along with the papers on April 3. The candidate was then asked to produce them before 3 p.m. on April 5, the last day for filing of nominations. However, the papers were produced only at about 6.p.m. Therefore, the papers of Gurumurthy and the substitute BJP candidate D Anbarasan were rejected.
Sankar said that out of 16 candidates, the nomination papers of six candidates were rejected. Since there was an objection to the community certificate of Aam Aadmi Candidate M T Rani on the ground that it was issued in 1986, Rani was given time till five p.m. to submit a fresh certificate.
Former Telecom Minister A Raja of the DMK is seeking re-election from the Nilgiris constituency.
K Thirumalaisamy, State Vice President of the BJP said that the party has recorded its objection to the rejection of Gurumurthy's nomination papers and said an appeal would be submitted.
