Chennai:
It was a case of the father expelling the son. M K Alagiri was on March 25 expelled from the DMK by his father and party president M Karunanidhi.
The South Zone organising secretary of the DMK and former Union minister, Alagiri, was expelled for his slanderous attacks on party leaders and for indulging in anti-party activities, the party said. Besides, Alagiri had failed to reply to the show-cause notice issued to Alagiri by the party.
“Despite having been already suspended from the party, Alagiri continued to violate party discipline, and is hence dismissed from the DMK,” party general secretary K Anbazhagan said in a statement in Chennai.
The expulsion seemed on the cards as the suspended DMK leader received a steady stream of visitors from other parties, particularly candidates of MDMK including Vaiko, BJP and the Congress. Alagiri had also told them that he would take a stand to be taken by his supporters in due course.
In view of the impact this was causing in the eyes of the electorate through extensive media coverage, the DMK decided to move swiftly and prevent more DMK men from supporting Alagiri and to neutralise him, particularly southern Tamil Nadu.
Meanwhile, Alagiri, reacting to the expulsion, said it was not valid and he would challenge it in court. The DMK had not given any concrete reply to his charges of acting in a partisan manner at the instance of his brother M K Stalin.
