Chennai: For the first time since the hospitalisation of Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa on Sept 22, the private hospital said she was "on
respiratory support" indicating that she was on ventilator support.

A hospital release on October 3 evening said the chief minister was on respiratory support and was being treated with antibiotics and
allied clinical measures for her infection.

"The treatment plan including appropriate antibiotics, respiratory support and other allied clinical measures are being continued to treat the infection", the hospital release said.

The release, signed by hospital chief operating officer Subbiah Viswanathan, said the chief minister was responding adequately to the
comprehensive treatment and had been advised further stay in the hospital.

Jayalalithaa was admitted to the hospital on September 22 for "fever and dehydration." On Sunday the hospital said, a team of
doctors, including Dr Richard Beale from the UK, was giving her antibiotics to treat her infection.

The latest bulletin from the hospital said the chief minister continued to improve. "The treatment plan, including appropriate
antibiotic, respiratory support and allied clinical measure, are being continued to treat the infection. The chief minister is responding
adequately to the comprehensive treatment being given to her. A team of doctors are collectively monitoring her treatment. The chief
minister has been advised further stay in the hospital for treatment," it said.

On October 2, the hospital said the chief minister was suffering from an "infection", which went beyond the September 22
description of fever and dehydration.
