Chennai: Ten Day Seminar on Ancient Chennai 2000 – Puliyur Kottam
 
A ten-day Seminar will be held on Ancient Chennai 2000 - Puliyur Kottam including field visits by Chennai 2000 Plus Trust from February 18 to 28, 2019, to highlight the historical and cultural treasures of Chennai which is over 2,000 years old. Epigraphists, Tamil scholars, experts in the field of archaeology and history, will take part in the seminar to be held at various venues. Puliyur Kottam, the name of ancient Chennai, was the administrative unit of Chennai for over 2,000 years with a rich tradition of literature, sculpture, trade and commerce, fine arts, excellent administration, decentralised and democratic governance through elected local bodies. The seminar will throw light on all these aspects and help document them.
 
Kindly note the following programmes and events as part of the Seminar:
 
Feb 18:  Field Visit to Fort Museum, Secretariat complex: Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) Superintending Archaeologist, Dr A M V Subramaniam, speaks on Ancient Chennai. 10.30 a.m. (Assemble at Secretariat 10.15 am).
 
Feb 19: Field visit to inscription sites, first Paleolithic site of Asia discovered by Dr Robert Bruce Foote, Tirusoolam, and Nanmangalam, Maangaanyam, Kundrathur and Pozhichalur: from Madura Travels, Egmore, opp Egmore station, 8 a.m, or 8.15 a.m, opp Kanchipuram SM Silks, next to Mylapore Kapaleeswarar temple,Convenor Thiru S. Balasubramani (Orissa Balu(, chairman, Integrated Ocean Research Institute), and Dr Chandramoorrthy, former Dy Director, Archaeology department. Return to Mylapore 5. pm :
 
Feb 20: Seminar on Tamil language and Puliyur Kottam: Dr S Saravanan, HOD, Saiva Sidhaanta Dept, Madras University, Dr Sasikala, Dr Saraswathy, Chennai Nirupargal Sangam, Government Estate, near MLA hostel, Chepauk, 4 pm.
 
Feb 21: Seminar on References in Jainism to Ancient Chennai - Puliyur Kottam : Department of Jainology, Madras University, Second Floor: Convenor: Dr Priyadarshana Jain: HOD, Mds Univ, Dr Neelakesi, Mr Ajithadoss, Mr R Rangaraj, Papers by Dr Champakalakshmi, Dr Murugesan, IFP: 10,30 am.
 
Feb 23: Field visit to Egmore Museum: Jainism exhibits, relics, images: Convenor, Mr K Ajithadoss, co-ordinator, Ahimsa Walk. 10.30 am :
 
Feb 23: Field visit to Thiruvanmiyur Marundheeswarar temple: Demo by Dr Arul Lakshminarayanan, Prof, IIT, Chennai, on Understanding Mathematical Designs in Thiruvanmiyur temple: 4 pm.
 
Feb 24: Field visit: Mamandur, Thirumukoodal, Manimangalam, Somangalam: Convenor Dr S Rajavelu, of Tamil University, Thanjavur, and former Epigraphist, ASI, 7 am. Departure from Egmore 715 Kodambakkam 730 Mylapore 740 Guindy 750 Adyar 815 Tambaram Return 330 p.m. (Registration fee Rs 1,500 per head, lunch provided)
 
Feb 25: Seminar on River Vegavathy : convenor Dr K Dayanidhi, HOD, Department of Vaishnavism, Madras University, and References in Sanskrit inscriptions, literature and Vaishnavism to Ancient Chennai: Speakers Dr Padmanabhan, Dr S Narasimhan, Asst prof, Department of Sanskrit, Mds Univ: venue Oriental Research Institute Hall, Madras University campus: 2 pm to 6 pm.
 
Feb 26: Visit to water bodies, lakes under rejuvenation programme of Environmentalist Foundation of India (EFI), convenor Thiru Arun Krishnamurthy, EFI.  Dep From Kanchipuram SM Silks, North Mada Street, Mylapore, 730 am.
 
Feb 27: Field Visit : Velachery, Adambakkam, Tirusoolam, Kundrathur, Mangadu, Koyambedu. Convenor Dr Chandramoorthy, former Deputy Director, Archaeology dept. 730 am from Velachery MRTS Station (Registration fee Rs 1,500 per head m lunch provided).
 
Feb 28: Valedictory function of Seminar: Chennai Nirupargal Sangam, Government Estate, Chepauk, 4.30 pm.
