Chennai:
Kamal Haasan’s Makkal Needhi Maiam released its political anthem album titled ‘Ithu Nammavar Padai’ in Chennai on June 25, 2018. The lyrics for the six songs in the album are penned down by Snehan, film lyricist and a participant of Bigg Boss which has Kamal as the anchor.
Most of the songs in the album have a strong folk connect as urumi melams work in conjunction with nagaswarams. Music director Tajnoor has also used EDM beats and characteristic music signatures of film music in the nineties in some songs.
The album style is different from that of the Dravidian movement as the emphasis is not on strong lyrics but more on the mood. However, the lyrics do convey a strong political message of reaching out and arousing the masses in Pattukottai Kalyanasundaram style. Like ‘Tamil Nadu thalai ezhuthu maara poguthu, Tharamana Aachiyai Paaka poguthu” and
‘Naattu nada seri illa.. anju varshum naattu adagu vekkuromae da’ received a thunderous applause.
Kamal Haasan in his speech said Snehan had correctly analysed his inner feelings and convictions about the way things were in the State and hinted that Snehan had understood him right from the last edition of Bigg Boss. “These songs are meant for the people and to inspire them, but I want to hear from them. It is their anger that inspires me,” Kamal said.
Party accepts first donation
The Makkal Needhi Maiam, which recently received the recognition of the Election Commission, got its first donation of Rs one lakh from workers of two industries in Puducherry. “We will be transparent about the money we receive from donors. Not bury it,” said Kamal on receiving the donation. The party declared that all donations which poured in before its recognition had been returned to donors.
