Chennai:
The Tamil Nadu Higher Education Department has permitted government arts and science colleges to increase the intake of students from this academic year.
The Government Order has said that government colleges can admit 20% more students in the arts category.
The order signed by Higher Education Secretary Sunil Paliwal states that in the science streams too colleges with laboratory facilities could take in 20% more students.
This follows a request from the Director of Collegiate Education.
The G.O. has come in the wake of a June 11 review meeting with officials of universities which come under the scanner of the department. The meeting had asked universities not to approve increased intake.
The minutes of the meeting stated that Vice-Chancellors and Registrars were requested not to grant approval for additional intake of students in government (20%), government aided (15%), and self-financing colleges (15%) until further government instruction.
Government college professors believe it would be difficult to take in more students when there was paucity of funds even for laboratories.
Enough attention had not been given to improve facilities or pay arrears due to teachers, the teachers’ associations have pointed out.
