Lalitha presents Damaru and Udukkai

Chennai: Violinist M Lalitha presented `Damaru and Udukkai’ as part of the series -- Musical Instruments in Divinity, a series of multi-media presentation, ar Arkay Convention Centre in Chennai on October 24, 2014.
 
Under the Production Grant, supported by the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, M Lalitha, Senior Violinist, Musician & Fulbright Fellow, (of the Duo M. Nandini), has been presenting a series of episodes on `Musical Instruments in Divinity’- a thematic multi-media presentation featuring different instruments each month. This series involves extensive research and in depth study since  Lalitha deals about the history, evolution of the instrument, mythological, sculptural evidences, 
 
its usage in temple rituals, similarities in global musical cultures, references in literature and some in musical compositions. 
 
Lalitha is currently the Director of the MS (Muthuswamy- Subbulakshmi) Academy of Global Music that fosters training not only in Carnatic Music but also World Music aspects. The instruments so far covered include the Vina, Venu, Gethuvadyam, Mridangam, Mridanga – Khol, Chenda, Chande, Tutari, Srnga, Kombu and Jewish Shofar. 
 
This month as part of the seventh episode on Friday October 24th 2014 the instruments to be featured were Damaru and Udukkai at the Arkay Convention Centre, 146/3 R.H.Road, 3rd floor, OMS Lakshana, Chennai 600004.from 6.30 p.m.  K S Kalidas, senior mridangam exponent, was the Chief Guest. 
 
This episode dealt with how the Damaru is connected with Divinity in Hinduism and Tibetan Buddhism,  as also the Udukkai in the temples of Tamil Nadu. The Tzusumi from the Japanese Musical tradition was also discussed.
